[306] What, on that occasion, is exertion (paggāha)?
That which on that occasion is the arousing of energy (vīriyārambha) that is mental (cetasika), striving, onward striving, endeavour, effort, zeal, perseverance, stamina, steadfastness, the state of not slackening in striving, the state of not relinquishing desire (chanda), the state of not relinquishing the task (dhura), the firm shouldering of the task, energy (vīriya), the faculty of energy (vīriyindriya), the power of energy (vīriyabala), wrong effort (micchāvāyāma) — this, on that occasion, is exertion.
