[804] Which phenomena (dhammā) are defiled (saṅkiliṭṭhā)?
The three unwholesome roots (akusalamūla) — greed, hatred, delusion (lobha, dosa, moha) — and the defilements (kilesa) standing together with them (tadekaṭṭha); the aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha) associated with them (taṃsampayutta) … the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇakkhandha); the bodily action, verbal action, and mental action originating from them (taṃsamuṭṭhāna) — these phenomena are defiled.
Which phenomena are undefiled (asaṅkiliṭṭhā)?
Wholesome and indeterminate (abyākata) phenomena of the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), of the form sphere (rūpāvacara), of the formless sphere (arūpāvacara), and unincluded (apariyāpanna): the aggregate of feeling … the aggregate of consciousness; and all form (rūpa), and the unconditioned element (asaṅkhatā dhātu) — these phenomena are undefiled.
