[667] Which phenomena (dhammā) are defiled and subject to defilement (saṅkiliṭṭha-saṅkilesikā)?
The three unwholesome roots (akusalamūla) — greed (lobha), hatred (dosa), delusion (moha) — and the defilements (kilesa) standing together with them; the feeling aggregate (vedanākkhandha) associated with them … the consciousness aggregate (viññāṇakkhandha); the bodily action (kāyakamma), verbal action (vacīkamma), and mental action (manokamma) originated by them — these phenomena are defiled and subject to defilement.
Which phenomena are undefiled but subject to defilement (asaṅkiliṭṭha-saṅkilesikā)?
Phenomena subject to taints (sāsava), wholesome and indeterminate (kusala-abyākata), of the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), the form sphere (rūpāvacara), the formless sphere (arūpāvacara): the form aggregate (rūpakkhandha), the feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate (saññākkhandha), the volitional-formations aggregate (saṅkhārakkhandha), the consciousness aggregate — these phenomena are undefiled but subject to defilement.
Which phenomena are undefiled and not subject to defilement (asaṅkiliṭṭha-asaṅkilesikā)?
The paths (magga) not included [in any sphere] (apariyāpanna), the fruits of the paths (maggaphala), and the unconditioned element (asaṅkhatā dhātu) — these phenomena are undefiled and not subject to defilement.
