[142] Seventeen elements (dhātu) are not defilements (kilesa); the dhamma-element (dhammadhātu) may be a defilement, may not be a defilement. Sixteen elements are subject to defilement (saṅkilesika); two elements may be subject to defilement, may be not subject to defilement (asaṅkilesika). Sixteen elements are undefiled (asaṅkiliṭṭha); two elements may be defiled (saṅkiliṭṭha), may be undefiled. Sixteen elements are dissociated from defilements (kilesa-vippayutta); two elements may be associated with defilements (kilesa-sampayutta), may be dissociated from defilements. Sixteen elements should not be described as both defilements and subject to defilement; they are both subject to defilement and not defilements. The mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇadhātu) should not be described as both a defilement and subject to defilement; it may be both subject to defilement and not a defilement, and may not be describable as both subject to defilement and not a defilement. The dhamma-element may be both a defilement and subject to defilement; may be both subject to defilement and not a defilement; and may not be describable either as both a defilement and subject to defilement or as both subject to defilement and not a defilement.
