[254] Fifteen faculties (indriya) are not to be abandoned by seeing (dassana); seven faculties sometimes are to be abandoned by seeing, sometimes are not to be abandoned by seeing. Fifteen faculties are not to be abandoned by development (bhāvanā); seven faculties sometimes are to be abandoned by development, sometimes are not to be abandoned by development. Fifteen faculties do not have roots to be abandoned by seeing; seven faculties sometimes have roots to be abandoned by seeing, sometimes do not have roots to be abandoned by seeing. Fifteen faculties do not have roots to be abandoned by development; seven faculties sometimes have roots to be abandoned by development, sometimes do not have roots to be abandoned by development. Nine faculties are without initial application (vitakka); the grief faculty (domanassindriya) is with initial application; twelve faculties sometimes are with initial application, sometimes are without initial application. Nine faculties are without sustained application (vicāra); the grief faculty is with sustained application; twelve faculties sometimes are with sustained application, sometimes are without sustained application. Eleven faculties are without rapture (pīti); eleven faculties sometimes are with rapture, sometimes are without rapture. Eleven faculties are not accompanied by rapture; eleven faculties sometimes are accompanied by rapture, sometimes are not accompanied by rapture. Twelve faculties are not accompanied by pleasure (sukha); ten faculties sometimes are accompanied by pleasure, sometimes are not accompanied by pleasure. Twelve faculties are not accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā); ten faculties sometimes are accompanied by equanimity, sometimes are not accompanied by equanimity. Ten faculties belong to the sense sphere (kāmāvacara); three faculties do not belong to the sense sphere; nine faculties sometimes belong to the sense sphere, sometimes do not belong to the sense sphere. Thirteen faculties do not belong to the form sphere (rūpāvacara); nine faculties sometimes belong to the form sphere, sometimes do not belong to the form sphere. Fourteen faculties do not belong to the formless sphere (arūpāvacara); eight faculties sometimes belong to the formless sphere, sometimes do not belong to the formless sphere. Ten faculties are included (pariyāpanna); three faculties are not included; nine faculties sometimes are included, sometimes are not included. Eleven faculties are not leading out (aniyyānika); the "I shall come to know the unknown" faculty (anaññātaññassāmītindriya) is leading out; ten faculties sometimes are leading out, sometimes are not leading out. Ten faculties are not fixed (aniyata); the "I shall come to know the unknown" faculty is fixed; eleven faculties sometimes are fixed, sometimes are not fixed. Ten faculties are surpassable (sa-uttara); three faculties are unsurpassable (anuttara); nine faculties sometimes are surpassable, sometimes are unsurpassable. Fifteen faculties are without conflict (araṇa); the grief faculty is with conflict (saraṇa); six faculties sometimes are with conflict, sometimes are without conflict.
