[267] Therein, what is aging-and-death with birth as condition (jātipaccayā jarāmaraṇaṃ)?
There is aging (jarā); there is death (maraṇa).
Therein, what is aging?
That which, for these or those beings in this or that order of beings (sattanikāya), is aging, decrepitude, brokenness of teeth, grayness of hair, wrinkledness of skin, the dwindling of the life span, the decay of the faculties (indriya) — this is called aging.
Therein, what is death?
That which, for these or those beings, is the passing away from this or that order of beings, the state of passing away, breakup, disappearance, mortality, death, the completion of one's time, the breaking up of the aggregates (khandha), the laying down of the corpse, the cutting off of the life-faculty (jīvitindriya) — this is called death.
Thus, this aging and this death — this is called aging-and-death with birth as condition.
