[498] "He arouses energy": herein, which is energy (vīriya)? That which is mental arousal of energy (vīriyārambha) … right effort (sammāvāyāma), the energy factor of awakening (vīriya-sambojjhaṅga), a factor of the path (magga), included in the path — this is called energy. He arouses, thoroughly arouses, cultivates, develops, and makes much of this energy. Therefore it is said, "he arouses energy."
