[528] And how does a bhikkhu develop the basis for success (iddhipāda) endowed with concentration (samādhi) due to investigation (vīmaṃsā) and with the volitional formations of striving (padhānasaṅkhāra)?
Here a bhikkhu, on whatever occasion he develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), conducing to the undoing of accumulation (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first plane (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — on that occasion he develops the basis for success endowed with concentration due to investigation and with the volitional formations of striving.
