[1722] Sakavādin: It should not be said: "A gift given to the Saṅgha is of great fruit (mahapphala)"? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: Is not the Saṅgha worthy of gifts (āhuneyya), worthy of hospitality (pāhuneyya), worthy of offerings (dakkhiṇeyya), worthy of reverential salutation (añjalīkaraṇīya), the unsurpassed field of merit (puññakkhetta) for the world? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: If the Saṅgha is worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality … the unsurpassed field of merit for the world, then indeed, sir, it should be said: "A gift given to the Saṅgha is of great fruit."
