[1078] For whomever and wherever bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra) arises, did verbal formation (vacīsaṅkhāra) arise for that one there?
For those who have attained the second jhāna or the third jhāna, at the moment of arising of the in-breaths and out-breaths (assāsa-passāsā), bodily formation arises for them there, but verbal formation did not arise for them there. For those who have attained the first jhāna and for sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) beings, at the moment of arising of the in-breaths and out-breaths, for them there bodily formation arises and verbal formation arose.
Or, for whomever and wherever verbal formation arose, does bodily formation arise for that one there?
For those who have attained the first jhāna and for sense-sphere beings at the moment of dissolution of the in-breaths and out-breaths; for those very same ones at the moment of arising of a mind (citta) without in-breaths and out-breaths; and for form-sphere (rūpāvacara) and formless-sphere (arūpāvacara) beings — verbal formation arose for them there, but bodily formation does not arise for them there. For those who have attained the first jhāna and for sense-sphere beings, at the moment of arising of the in-breaths and out-breaths, for them there verbal formation arose and bodily formation arises.
