[1208] For whomever, wherever, the bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra) arises, will the verbal formation (vacīsaṅkhāra) cease for that one there?
For those who have attained the second jhāna or the third jhāna, at the moment of arising of the in-and-out breaths (assāsa-passāsa), the bodily formation arises for them there, but the verbal formation will not cease for them there. For those who have attained the first jhāna and for sense-sphere beings (kāmāvacara), at the moment of arising of the in-and-out breaths, the bodily formation arises for them there and the verbal formation will cease.
Or rather, for whomever, wherever, the verbal formation will cease, does the bodily formation arise for that one there?
For those who have attained the first jhāna and for sense-sphere beings, at the moment of dissolution of the in-and-out breaths, and — for those very same beings — at the moment of arising of a mind (citta) without the in-and-out breaths, and for form-sphere beings (rūpāvacara) and formless-sphere beings (arūpāvacara), the verbal formation will cease for them there, but the bodily formation does not arise for them there. For those who have attained the first jhāna and for sense-sphere beings, at the moment of arising of the in-and-out breaths, the verbal formation will cease for them there and the bodily formation arises.
