[1240] Where the latent tendency of sensual lust (kāmarāgānusaya), the latent tendency of repulsion (paṭighānusaya), and the latent tendency of conceit (mānānusaya) lie latent, does the latent tendency of view (diṭṭhānusaya) … the latent tendency of doubt (vicikicchānusaya) lie latent there?
There is none.
Or rather, where the latent tendency of doubt lies latent, do the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent there?
In the form element (rūpadhātu) and in the formless element (arūpadhātu): here the latent tendency of doubt and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent, but the latent tendency of sensual lust and the latent tendency of repulsion do not lie latent there. In two feelings (vedanā) in the sense-sphere element (kāmadhātu): here the latent tendency of doubt, the latent tendency of sensual lust, and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent, but the latent tendency of repulsion does not lie latent there. In painful feeling (dukkhā vedanā): here the latent tendency of doubt and the latent tendency of repulsion lie latent, but the latent tendency of sensual lust and the latent tendency of conceit do not lie latent there.
Where the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent, does the latent tendency of lust for existence (bhavarāgānusaya) lie latent there?
There is none.
Or rather, where the latent tendency of lust for existence lies latent, do the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent there?
In the form element and in the formless element: here the latent tendency of lust for existence and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent, but the latent tendency of sensual lust and the latent tendency of repulsion do not lie latent there. In two feelings in the sense-sphere element: here the latent tendency of sensual lust and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent, but the latent tendency of lust for existence and the latent tendency of repulsion do not lie latent there. In painful feeling: here the latent tendency of repulsion lies latent, but the latent tendency of lust for existence, the latent tendency of sensual lust, and the latent tendency of conceit do not lie latent there.¹
Where the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent, does the latent tendency of ignorance (avijjānusaya) lie latent there?
There is none.
Or rather, where the latent tendency of ignorance lies latent, do the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent there?
In the form element and in the formless element: here the latent tendency of ignorance and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent, but the latent tendency of sensual lust and the latent tendency of repulsion do not lie latent there. In two feelings in the sense-sphere element: here the latent tendency of ignorance, the latent tendency of sensual lust, and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent, but the latent tendency of repulsion does not lie latent there. In painful feeling: here the latent tendency of ignorance and the latent tendency of repulsion lie latent, but the latent tendency of sensual lust and the latent tendency of conceit do not lie latent there.
¹ [Editorial note in the Siamese edition:] The wording "in two feelings in the sense-sphere element … the latent tendency of repulsion and the latent tendency of conceit lie latent" may be superfluous; for in this section (vāra) the question asks only for the place where the latent tendency of lust for existence lies latent together with the others, not for the places of the others; therefore the answer should be given by indicating only that place where it lies latent.
