[1319] Whoever is beset (sānusaya) by the latent tendency of sensual lust (kāmarāgānusaya), the latent tendency of repulsion (paṭighānusaya), the latent tendency of conceit (mānānusaya), the latent tendency of view (diṭṭhānusaya), and the latent tendency of doubt (vicikicchānusaya) from whatever [basis] — is he beset therefrom by the latent tendency of lust for existence (bhavarāgānusaya)?
There is none.
Or rather, whoever is beset by the latent tendency of lust for existence from whatever [basis] — is he beset therefrom by the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of view, and the latent tendency of doubt?
Three persons, in the form element (rūpadhātu) and the formless element (arūpadhātu): they are beset therefrom by the latent tendency of lust for existence and the latent tendency of conceit, but they are not beset therefrom by the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of view, or the latent tendency of doubt. The ordinary person (puthujjana), in the form element and the formless element: he is beset therefrom by the latent tendency of lust for existence, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of view, and the latent tendency of doubt, but he is not beset therefrom by the latent tendency of sensual lust or the latent tendency of repulsion.
Whoever is beset by the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of view, and the latent tendency of doubt from whatever [basis] — is he beset therefrom by the latent tendency of ignorance (avijjānusaya)?
There is none.
Or rather, whoever is beset by the latent tendency of ignorance from whatever [basis] — is he beset therefrom by the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of view, and the latent tendency of doubt?
The non-returner (anāgāmī), in painful feeling (dukkhā vedanā): he is beset therefrom by the latent tendency of ignorance, but he is not beset therefrom by the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of view, or the latent tendency of doubt. That same person, in the two feelings in the sensual element (kāmadhātu) and in the form element and the formless element: he is beset therefrom by the latent tendency of ignorance and the latent tendency of conceit, but he is not beset therefrom by the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of view, or the latent tendency of doubt. Two persons, in the form element and the formless element: they are beset therefrom by the latent tendency of ignorance and the latent tendency of conceit, but they are not beset therefrom by the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of view, or the latent tendency of doubt.
