[1349] Wherever anyone is free from the latent tendency of sensual lust (kāmarāgānusaya) and from the latent tendency of repulsion (paṭighānusaya), is he therefrom free from the latent tendency of conceit (mānānusaya)?
Three persons — in the form element (rūpadhātu) and in the formless element (arūpadhātu): they are therefrom free from the latent tendency of sensual lust and from the latent tendency of repulsion, but they are not therefrom free from the latent tendency of conceit. Those same persons — in the unincluded (apariyāpanna): they are therefrom free from the latent tendency of sensual lust and from the latent tendency of repulsion, and free from the latent tendency of conceit. The Non-Returner (anāgāmī) — in the two feelings (vedanā) in the sensual element (kāmadhātu), in the form element, and in the formless element: he is therefrom free from the latent tendency of sensual lust and from the latent tendency of repulsion, but he is not therefrom free from the latent tendency of conceit. That same person — in painful feeling (dukkhā vedanā) and in the unincluded: he is therefrom free from the latent tendency of sensual lust and from the latent tendency of repulsion, and free from the latent tendency of conceit. The Arahant (arahā) is everywhere free from the latent tendency of sensual lust and from the latent tendency of repulsion, and free from the latent tendency of conceit.
Or rather, wherever anyone is free from the latent tendency of conceit, is he therefrom free from the latent tendency of sensual lust and from the latent tendency of repulsion?
