[1409] One who does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust (kāmarāgānusaya) from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion (paṭighānusaya) from that place? The person endowed with the path of non-returning (anāgāmimagga): as regards painful feeling (dukkhā vedanā), he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion therefrom. That same person: as regards the form element (rūpadhātu), the formless element (arūpadhātu), and the not-included (apariyāpanna), he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion. Excepting the person endowed with the path of non-returning, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion in any place. Or: one who does not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust from that place? The person endowed with the path of non-returning: as regards the two feelings in the sense-sphere element (kāmadhātu), he does not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom. That same person: as regards the form element, the formless element, and the not-included, he does not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. Excepting the person endowed with the path of non-returning, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion and do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust in any place. One who does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of conceit (mānānusaya) from that place? The person endowed with the highest path (aggamagga): as regards the two feelings in the sense-sphere element, the form element, and the formless element, he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of conceit therefrom. That same person: as regards painful feeling and the not-included, he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of conceit. Excepting the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not abandon the latent tendency of conceit in any place. Or: one who does not abandon the latent tendency of conceit from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust from that place? The person endowed with the path of non-returning: as regards the two feelings in the sense-sphere element, he does not abandon the latent tendency of conceit therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom. That same person: as regards painful feeling, the form element, the formless element, and the not-included, he does not abandon the latent tendency of conceit therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. Excepting the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of conceit and do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust in any place. One who does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of view (diṭṭhānusaya) … the latent tendency of doubt (vicikicchānusaya) from that place? The Eighth Person (aṭṭhamaka): as regards the three feelings in the sense-sphere element, the form element, and the formless element, he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of doubt therefrom. That same person: as regards the not-included, he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of doubt. Excepting the person endowed with the path of non-returning and the Eighth Person, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not abandon the latent tendency of doubt in any place. Or: one who does not abandon the latent tendency of doubt from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust from that place? The person endowed with the path of non-returning: as regards the two feelings in the sense-sphere element, he does not abandon the latent tendency of doubt therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom. That same person: as regards painful feeling, the form element, the formless element, and the not-included, he does not abandon the latent tendency of doubt therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. Excepting the person endowed with the path of non-returning and the Eighth Person, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of doubt and do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust in any place. One who does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of lust for existence (bhavarāgānusaya) from that place? The person endowed with the highest path: as regards the form element and the formless element, he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of lust for existence therefrom. That same person: as regards the three feelings in the sense-sphere element and the not-included, he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of lust for existence. Excepting the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not abandon the latent tendency of lust for existence in any place. Or: one who does not abandon the latent tendency of lust for existence from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust from that place? The person endowed with the path of non-returning: as regards the two feelings in the sense-sphere element, he does not abandon the latent tendency of lust for existence therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom. That same person: as regards painful feeling, the form element, the formless element, and the not-included, he does not abandon the latent tendency of lust for existence therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. Excepting the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of lust for existence and do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust in any place. One who does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance (avijjānusaya) from that place? The person endowed with the highest path: as regards the three feelings in the sense-sphere element, the form element, and the formless element, he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance therefrom. That same person: as regards the not-included, he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance. Excepting the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance in any place. Or: one who does not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance from a given place — does he not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust from that place? The person endowed with the path of non-returning: as regards the two feelings in the sense-sphere element, he does not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance therefrom, but it is not that he does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust therefrom. That same person: as regards painful feeling, the form element, the formless element, and the not-included, he does not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance therefrom and does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. Excepting the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance and do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust in any place.
