[1387] One who does not abandon the latent tendency (anusaya) of sensual lust (kāmarāgānusaya)—does that one not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion (paṭighānusaya)? Yes. Or rather, one who does not abandon the latent tendency of repulsion—does that one not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust? Yes. One who does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust—does that one not abandon the latent tendency of conceit (mānānusaya)? One endowed with the highest path (aggamagga) does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust, but it is not the case that that one does not abandon the latent tendency of conceit. Excepting those endowed with the two paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not abandon the latent tendency of conceit. Or rather, one who does not abandon the latent tendency of conceit—does that one not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust? One endowed with the path of non-returning (anāgāmimagga) does not abandon the latent tendency of conceit, but it is not the case that that one does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. Excepting those endowed with the two paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of conceit and do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. One who does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust—does that one not abandon the latent tendency of views (diṭṭhānusaya) … the latent tendency of doubt (vicikicchānusaya)? The eighth person (aṭṭhamaka) does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust, but it is not the case that that one does not abandon the latent tendency of doubt. Excepting the one endowed with the path of non-returning and the eighth person, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not abandon the latent tendency of doubt. Or rather, one who does not abandon the latent tendency of doubt—does that one not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust? One endowed with the path of non-returning does not abandon the latent tendency of doubt, but it is not the case that that one does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. Excepting the one endowed with the path of non-returning and the eighth person, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of doubt and do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. One who does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust—does that one not abandon the latent tendency of lust for existence (bhavarāgānusaya) … the latent tendency of ignorance (avijjānusaya)? One endowed with the highest path does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust, but it is not the case that that one does not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance. Excepting those endowed with the two paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance. Or rather, one who does not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance—does that one not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust? One endowed with the path of non-returning does not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance, but it is not the case that that one does not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust. Excepting those endowed with the two paths, the remaining persons do not abandon the latent tendency of ignorance and do not abandon the latent tendency of sensual lust.
