[1173] For whomever the life faculty (jīvitindriya) does not arise, will the joy faculty (somanassindriya) not arise for him?
For all who are passing away, and at the moment of dissolution (bhaṅgakkhaṇa) of mind (citta) in the course of existence (pavatti), the life faculty does not arise for them, yet it is not the case that the joy faculty will not arise for them. At the moment of dissolution of the final mind (pacchimacitta), and at the moment of dissolution of that mind in immediate succession to which the final mind associated with equanimity (upekkhā-sampayutta) will arise — for them the life faculty does not arise, and the joy faculty will not arise.
Or, for whomever the joy faculty will not arise, does the life faculty not arise for him?
At the moment of arising (uppādakkhaṇa) of the final mind, and at the moment of arising of that mind in immediate succession to which the final mind associated with equanimity will arise — for them the joy faculty will not arise, yet it is not the case that the life faculty does not arise for them. At the moment of dissolution of the final mind, and at the moment of dissolution of that mind in immediate succession to which the final mind associated with equanimity will arise — for them the joy faculty will not arise, and the life faculty does not arise.
