[635] For whomever the life faculty (jīvitindriya) does not arise, does the joy faculty (somanassindriya) not arise for him?
Yes.
Or rather, for whomever the joy faculty does not arise, does the life faculty not arise for him?
For those being reborn without joy (somanassa), and, in the course of existence (pavatta), at the moment of arising (uppādakkhaṇa) of a mind (citta) dissociated from joy: for these the joy faculty does not arise, yet it is not the case that the life faculty does not arise for them. For all those passing away, and, in the course of existence, at the moment of dissolution (bhaṅgakkhaṇa) of mind: for these the joy faculty does not arise and the life faculty does not arise.
