[1217] For whomever, wherever, the joy faculty (somanassindriya) does not arise, will the faith faculty (saddhindriya) … the wisdom faculty (paññindriya), the mind faculty (manindriya) not arise for that one there?
For all [beings] at the moment of the dissolution (bhaṅgakkhaṇa) of a mind (citta), and at the moment of the arising (uppādakkhaṇa) of a mind dissociated from joy: the joy faculty does not arise for them there, but it is not the case that the mind faculty will not arise for them there. At the moment of the dissolution of the final mind (pacchimacitta) associated with joy, for those endowed with a final mind associated with equanimity (upekkhā), and for non-percipient beings (asaññasattā): the joy faculty does not arise for them there, and the mind faculty will not arise.
Or, for whomever, wherever, the mind faculty will not arise, does the joy faculty not arise for that one there?
At the moment of the arising of the final mind associated with joy: the mind faculty will not arise for them there, but it is not the case that the joy faculty does not arise for them there. At the moment of the dissolution of the final mind associated with joy, for those endowed with a final mind associated with equanimity, and for non-percipient beings: the mind faculty will not arise for them there, and the joy faculty does not arise.
