[1176] For whom the joy faculty (somanassindriya) does not arise, will the equanimity faculty (upekkhindriya) not arise for him?
For all [beings] at the moment of the dissolution (bhaṅgakkhaṇa) of mind (citta), at the moment of the arising (uppādakkhaṇa) of a mind dissociated from joy (somanassavippayutta), for those who have attained cessation (nirodhasamāpanna), and for non-percipient beings (asaññasatta): for them the joy faculty does not arise, but it is not the case that the equanimity faculty will not arise for them. At the moment of the dissolution of the final mind (pacchimacitta) associated with joy, for those possessed of the final mind associated with equanimity, and at the moment of the dissolution of that mind immediately after which the final mind associated with joy will arise: for them the joy faculty does not arise and the equanimity faculty will not arise.
Or, for whom the equanimity faculty will not arise, does the joy faculty not arise for him?
At the moment of the arising of the final mind associated with joy, and at the moment of the arising of that mind immediately after which the final mind associated with joy will arise: for them the equanimity faculty will not arise, but it is not the case that the joy faculty does not arise for them. At the moment of the dissolution of the final mind associated with joy, for those possessed of the final mind associated with equanimity, and at the moment of the dissolution of that mind immediately after which the final mind associated with joy will arise: for them the equanimity faculty will not arise and the joy faculty does not arise.
