[1349] Whoever does not abandon the grief faculty (domanassindriya), does he not develop the 'I shall come to know the unknown' faculty (anaññātaññassāmītindriya)?
The eighth person (aṭṭhamaka) does not abandon the grief faculty, yet it is not the case that he does not develop the 'I shall come to know the unknown' faculty. Excepting the two persons endowed with the path (maggasamaṅgino), the remaining persons neither abandon the grief faculty nor develop the 'I shall come to know the unknown' faculty.
Or rather, whoever does not develop the 'I shall come to know the unknown' faculty, does he not abandon the grief faculty?
One endowed with the path of non-returning (anāgāmi-magga) does not develop the 'I shall come to know the unknown' faculty, yet it is not the case that he does not abandon the grief faculty. Excepting the two persons endowed with the path, the remaining persons neither develop the 'I shall come to know the unknown' faculty nor abandon the grief faculty.
