[1429] Will one who does not abandon the faculty of grief (domanassindriya) not develop the faculty of 'I shall come to know the unknown' (anaññātaññassāmītindriya)?
Those ordinary persons (puthujjanā) who will attain the path (magga) do not abandon the faculty of grief, but it is not the case that they will not develop the faculty of 'I shall come to know the unknown.' Eight persons both do not abandon the faculty of grief and will not develop the faculty of 'I shall come to know the unknown.'
Or rather, does one who will not develop the faculty of 'I shall come to know the unknown' not abandon the faculty of grief?
One endowed with the path of non-returning (anāgāmimagga) will not develop the faculty of 'I shall come to know the unknown,' but it is not the case that he does not abandon the faculty of grief. Eight persons both will not develop the faculty of 'I shall come to know the unknown' and do not abandon the faculty of grief.
