[525] For whomever the joy faculty (somanassindriya) arises, does the faith faculty (saddhindriya) arise for him?
For rootless beings (ahetuka) being reborn with joy (somanassa), and, in the course of existence (pavatti), at the moment of arising (uppādakkhaṇa) of a mind (citta) associated with joy and dissociated from faith (saddhā), the joy faculty arises for them, but the faith faculty does not arise for them. For those being reborn with joy, and, in the course of existence, at the moment of arising of a mind associated with joy and associated with faith, for them both the joy faculty arises and the faith faculty arises.
Or rather, for whomever the faith faculty arises, does the joy faculty arise for him?
For beings with roots (sahetuka) being reborn without joy, and, in the course of existence, at the moment of arising of a mind associated with faith and dissociated from joy, the faith faculty arises for them, but the joy faculty does not arise for them. For those being reborn with joy, and, in the course of existence, at the moment of arising of a mind associated with faith and associated with joy, for them both the faith faculty arises and the joy faculty arises.
