Abhidhammapiṭaka · Paṭṭhāna (1) · Vol. 40 · Section 1606

[1606] A phenomenon that is clung to and subject to clinging (upādinnupādāniyo dhammo) is a condition, by presence condition (atthi-paccaya), for a phenomenon that is clung to and subject to clinging: conascent, prenascent, postnascent, nutriment, faculty. Conascent: one aggregate (khandha) that is clung to and subject to clinging is a condition, by presence condition, for three aggregates; two aggregates are a condition, by presence condition, for two aggregates. At the moment of rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), one aggregate that is clung to and subject to clinging is a condition, by presence condition, for three aggregates and for kamma-produced materiality (kaṭattā-rūpa); two aggregates are a condition, by presence condition, for two aggregates and for kamma-produced materiality. The aggregates (are a condition) for the base (vatthu); the base, for the aggregates. One primary element (mahābhūta) … the primary elements are a condition, by presence condition, for kamma-produced derivative materiality (upādā-rūpa). For non-percipient beings (asaññasatta): one primary element … the primary elements are a condition, by presence condition, for kamma-produced derivative materiality. Prenascent: trainees (sekha) or worldlings (puthujjana) contemplate with insight the eye as impermanent, as suffering (dukkha), as not-self; they relish and delight in it. Taking that as object, lust (rāga) arises, grief arises. When the wholesome and the unwholesome (kusala, akusala) have ceased, the resultant (vipāka) arises as registration (tadārammaṇatā). They contemplate with insight the ear … the nose, the tongue, the body, forms, odours, tastes, tangible objects that are clung to and subject to clinging, … the base, as impermanent, as suffering, as not-self; they relish and delight in it. Taking that as object, lust arises, grief arises. When the wholesome and the unwholesome have ceased, the resultant arises as registration. The form base (rūpāyatana) that is clung to and subject to clinging (is a condition) for eye-consciousness (cakkhu-viññāṇa); the odour base (gandhāyatana) that is clung to and subject to clinging … the taste base (rasāyatana) … the tangible base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana), for body-consciousness (kāya-viññāṇa); the eye base (cakkhāyatana), for eye-consciousness … the body base (kāyāyatana), for body-consciousness; the base is a condition, by presence condition, for the aggregates that are clung to and subject to clinging. Postnascent: aggregates that are clung to and subject to clinging are a condition, by presence condition, for this prenascent body that is clung to and subject to clinging. Edible food (kabaḷīkāra āhāra) that is clung to and subject to clinging is a condition, by presence condition, for the body that is clung to and subject to clinging. The material life faculty (rūpa-jīvitindriya) is a condition, by presence condition, for kamma-produced materiality.
