[1685] A phenomenon (dhamma) that is undefiled but subject to defilement (asaṅkiliṭṭha-saṅkilesika) is a condition, by predominance condition (adhipati-paccaya), for a phenomenon that is defiled and subject to defilement (saṅkiliṭṭha-saṅkilesika).
Object-predominance (ārammaṇādhipati): Having given a gift (dāna), having undertaken virtue (sīla), having performed the Uposatha observance (uposathakamma), having given importance to that, one relishes and delights in it; having given importance to that, lust (rāga) arises, wrong view (diṭṭhi) arises. Having given importance to what was formerly well practiced, one relishes and delights in it. Having emerged from jhāna, having given importance to the jhāna, one relishes and delights in it. Having given importance to the eye (cakkhu), one relishes and delights in it; tangible objects (phoṭṭhabba) … the base (vatthu) … having given importance to the aggregates (khandhā) that are undefiled but subject to defilement, one relishes and delights in them; having given importance to that, lust arises, wrong view arises.
