[1927] A past phenomenon (atīto dhammo) is a condition for a present phenomenon (paccuppanno dhammo) by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya): object decisive-support (ārammaṇūpanissaya), proximity decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive-support: … In dependence on past faith (saddhā), one gives a gift (dāna), virtue (sīla) … performs the uposatha observance (uposathakamma), gives rise to jhāna … insight (vipassanā) … the path (magga) … superknowledge (abhiññā) … attainment (samāpatti); one conceives conceit (māna), grasps a view (diṭṭhi).
In dependence on past virtue … wisdom (paññā), lust (rāga), longing (patthanā), bodily pleasure (kāyika sukha) … bodily pain (kāyika dukkha), one gives a gift, virtue … the uposatha observance … gives rise to attainment; one kills a living being, causes schism in the Saṅgha.
Past faith … wisdom, lust, longing, bodily pleasure … bodily pain is a condition for present faith, for wisdom, for lust, for longing … for the attainment of fruition (phala-samāpatti), by decisive-support condition.
