[486] Conditioned by a phenomenon (dhamma) that is a defilement (kilesa), a phenomenon that is a defilement arises by root condition (hetu-paccaya): three [cases], similar to [those in] the dependence [section] (paṭicca).
Conditioned by a phenomenon that is not a defilement, a phenomenon that is not a defilement arises by root condition: conditioned by one aggregate (khandha) that is not a defilement, three aggregates [arise] — as far as the internal primary elements (mahābhūtā); conditioned by the base (vatthu), the aggregates that are not defilements [arise].
Conditioned by a phenomenon that is not a defilement, a phenomenon that is a defilement arises by root condition: conditioned by the aggregates that are not defilements, the defilements [arise]; conditioned by the base, the defilements [arise].

Conditioned by a phenomenon that is a defilement and a phenomenon that is not a defilement, a phenomenon that is a defilement arises by root condition: conditioned by greed (lobha) and the associated aggregates, delusion (moha), view (diṭṭhi), dullness (thīna), restlessness (uddhacca), shamelessness (ahirika), and lack of moral dread (anottappa) [arise]. The cycle (cakkaṃ). Conditioned by greed and the base, the defilements [arise].

Under the object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya), in [the section] rooted in the phenomenon that is not a defilement, the five [sense-]consciousnesses (viññāṇa) should be included.
