[113] A bhikkhu who has spread the kathina (atthatakaṭhina) departs in expectation of a robe (cīvarāsā). Gone outside the boundary (sīmā), he pursues that expectation of a robe; he obtains a robe where he had not expected, he does not obtain one where he had expected. He thinks thus: "I shall have this robe made right here; I shall not return." He has that robe made. For that bhikkhu the withdrawal of the kathina (kaṭhinuddhāra) is determined by the completion of the robe.
A bhikkhu who has spread the kathina departs in expectation of a robe. Gone outside the boundary, he pursues that expectation of a robe; he obtains a robe where he had not expected, he does not obtain one where he had expected. He thinks thus: "I shall neither have this robe made nor return." For that bhikkhu the withdrawal of the kathina is determined by his decision.
A bhikkhu who has spread the kathina departs in expectation of a robe. Gone outside the boundary, he pursues that expectation of a robe; he obtains a robe where he had not expected, he does not obtain one where he had expected. He thinks thus: "I shall have this robe made right here; I shall not return." He has that robe made. While that robe is being made, it is lost. For that bhikkhu the withdrawal of the kathina is determined by the loss of the robe.
A bhikkhu who has spread the kathina departs in expectation of a robe. Gone outside the boundary, he thinks thus: "Right here I shall pursue this expectation of a robe; I shall not return." He pursues that expectation of a robe. That expectation of a robe of his is cut off. For that bhikkhu the withdrawal of the kathina is determined by the cutting off of expectation.
