[117] A bhikkhu who has taken part in spreading the kathina (atthatakaṭhino) departs with the expectation of robe-cloth (cīvara), thinking, "I shall return." Having gone outside the boundary (sīmā), he hears: "The kathina in that dwelling place (āvāsa), it is said, has been withdrawn." He thinks thus: "Since the kathina in that dwelling place has been withdrawn, I shall pursue this expectation of robe-cloth right here." He pursues that expectation of robe-cloth; he obtains it in accordance with his expectation, he does not obtain it contrary to his expectation. He thinks thus: "I shall have this robe made right here; I shall not return." He has that robe made. For that bhikkhu, the withdrawal of the kathina (kaṭhinuddhāra) is determined by completion (of the robe).
A bhikkhu who has taken part in spreading the kathina departs with the expectation of robe-cloth, thinking, "I shall return." Having gone outside the boundary, he hears: "The kathina in that dwelling place, it is said, has been withdrawn." He thinks thus: "Since the kathina in that dwelling place has been withdrawn, I shall pursue this expectation of robe-cloth right here." He pursues that expectation of robe-cloth; he obtains it in accordance with his expectation, he does not obtain it contrary to his expectation. He thinks thus: "I shall neither have this robe made nor return." For that bhikkhu, the withdrawal of the kathina is determined by decision.
A bhikkhu who has taken part in spreading the kathina departs with the expectation of robe-cloth, thinking, "I shall return." Having gone outside the boundary, he hears: "The kathina in that dwelling place, it is said, has been withdrawn." He thinks thus: "Since the kathina in that dwelling place has been withdrawn, I shall pursue this expectation of robe-cloth right here." He pursues that expectation of robe-cloth; he obtains it in accordance with his expectation, he does not obtain it contrary to his expectation. He thinks thus: "I shall have this robe made right here; I shall not return." He has that robe made. While that robe of his is being made, it is destroyed. For that bhikkhu, the withdrawal of the kathina is determined by destruction (of the robe).
A bhikkhu who has taken part in spreading the kathina departs with the expectation of robe-cloth, thinking, "I shall return." Having gone outside the boundary, he hears: "The kathina in that dwelling place, it is said, has been withdrawn." He thinks thus: "Since the kathina in that dwelling place has been withdrawn, I shall pursue this expectation of robe-cloth right here; I shall not return." He pursues that expectation of robe-cloth. That expectation of robe-cloth of his is cut off. For that bhikkhu, the withdrawal of the kathina is determined by the cutting off of expectation.
