Adhibāyakaṁpenavagga

Vinayapiṭaka · Mahāvagga (2) · Vol. 5 · Section 204

[204] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu is a maker of strife, a maker of quarrels, a maker of disputes, a maker of contentious talk, a creator of legal issues (adhikaraṇa) in the Saṅgha. In that case, if it occurs to the bhikkhus thus: "Friends, this bhikkhu is a maker of strife, a maker of quarrels, a maker of disputes, a maker of contentious talk, a creator of legal issues in the Saṅgha; come, let us carry out an act of censure (tajjanīyakamma) against him," they then carry out the act of censure against him—not in accordance with Dhamma, and as an incomplete assembly. That bhikkhu goes from that residence to another residence. There too it occurs to the bhikkhus thus: "Friends, this bhikkhu has had an act of censure carried out against him by a Saṅgha not in accordance with Dhamma and incomplete; come, let us carry out an act of censure against him," and they carry out the act of censure against him—not in accordance with Dhamma, but as a complete assembly. He goes from that residence to another residence. There too it occurs to the bhikkhus thus: "Friends, this bhikkhu has had an act of censure carried out against him by a Saṅgha not in accordance with Dhamma though complete; come, let us carry out an act of censure against him," and they carry out the act of censure against him—in accordance with Dhamma, but as an incomplete assembly. He goes from that residence to another residence. There too it occurs to the bhikkhus thus: "Friends, this bhikkhu has had an act of censure carried out against him by a Saṅgha in accordance with Dhamma but incomplete; come, let us carry out an act of censure against him," and they carry out the act of censure against him—by a semblance of Dhamma, and as an incomplete assembly. He goes from that residence to another residence. There too it occurs to the bhikkhus thus: "Friends, this bhikkhu has had an act of censure carried out against him by a Saṅgha acting by a semblance of Dhamma and incomplete; come, let us carry out an act of censure against him," and they carry out the act of censure against him—by a semblance of Dhamma, but as a complete assembly.
