[226] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu, having committed an offense, does not wish to see the offense. If, in that case, the bhikkhus think: "Friends, this bhikkhu, having committed an offense, does not wish to see the offense. Come now, let us carry out an act of suspension (ukkhepanīyakamma) against him for not seeing the offense." They carry out the act of suspension against him for not seeing the offense — divided, contrary to the Dhamma … united, in accordance with the Dhamma [variant: contrary to the Dhamma]; divided, in accordance with the Dhamma; divided, by a semblance of the Dhamma; united, by a semblance of the Dhamma. The Saṅgha present there disputes: "It is a formal act (kamma) done by a divided assembly contrary to the Dhamma; a formal act done by a united assembly contrary to the Dhamma; a formal act done by a divided assembly in accordance with the Dhamma; a formal act done by a divided assembly by a semblance of the Dhamma; a formal act done by a united assembly by a semblance of the Dhamma; the act is not done; the act is badly done; the act must be done again." Therein, bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who say, "It is a formal act done by a united assembly by a semblance of the Dhamma," and those bhikkhus who say, "The act is not done, the act is badly done, the act must be done again" — these bhikkhus therein are speakers of Dhamma. These five rounds are stated in brief.
Bhikkhus, here again a bhikkhu, having committed an offense, does not wish to make amends for the offense. If, in that case, the bhikkhus think: "Friends, this bhikkhu, having committed an offense, does not wish to make amends for the offense. Come now, let us carry out an act of suspension against him for not making amends for the offense." They carry out the act of suspension against him for not making amends for the offense — divided, contrary to the Dhamma … united, contrary to the Dhamma; divided, in accordance with the Dhamma; divided, by a semblance of the Dhamma; united, by a semblance of the Dhamma. The Saṅgha present there disputes: "It is a formal act done by a divided assembly contrary to the Dhamma; a formal act done by a united assembly contrary to the Dhamma; a formal act done by a divided assembly in accordance with the Dhamma; a formal act done by a divided assembly by a semblance of the Dhamma; a formal act done by a united assembly by a semblance of the Dhamma; the act is not done; the act is badly done; the act must be done again." Therein, bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who say, "It is a formal act done by a united assembly by a semblance of the Dhamma," and those bhikkhus who say, "The act is not done, the act is badly done, the act must be done again" — these bhikkhus therein are speakers of Dhamma. These five rounds are stated in brief.
Bhikkhus, here again a bhikkhu does not wish to relinquish an evil view. If, in that case, the bhikkhus think: "Friends, this bhikkhu does not wish to relinquish his evil view. Come now, let us carry out an act of suspension against him for not relinquishing his evil view." They carry out the act of suspension against him for not relinquishing his evil view — divided, contrary to the Dhamma … united, contrary to the Dhamma; divided, in accordance with the Dhamma; divided, by a semblance of the Dhamma; united, by a semblance of the Dhamma.
