[231] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu against whom an act of censure (tajjanīyakamma) has been carried out by the Saṅgha behaves properly, is subdued, conducts himself so as to deserve release, and asks for the revocation of the act of censure. If in that case the bhikkhus think thus: "Friends, this bhikkhu against whom an act of censure has been carried out by the Saṅgha behaves properly, is subdued, conducts himself so as to deserve release, and asks for the revocation of the act of censure. Come, let us revoke the act of censure for him." They revoke the act of censure for him — united, but by a semblance of Dhamma. The Saṅgha present there disputes: "It is an act by an incomplete assembly, not in accordance with Dhamma; an act by a united assembly, not in accordance with Dhamma; an act by an incomplete assembly, in accordance with Dhamma; an act by an incomplete assembly, by a semblance of Dhamma; an act by a united assembly, by a semblance of Dhamma; the act is not done, the act is badly done, the act must be done again." Therein, bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who said, "It is an act by a united assembly, by a semblance of Dhamma," and those bhikkhus who said, "The act is not done, the act is badly done, the act must be done again" — these bhikkhus there are speakers of Dhamma.
