[244] "And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu who is developing the Noble Eightfold Path (ariya aṭṭhaṅgika magga), who is cultivating the Noble Eightfold Path, come to slant toward Nibbāna, slope toward Nibbāna, incline toward Nibbāna? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view (sammādiṭṭhi), which slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna … he develops right concentration (sammāsamādhi), which slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu who is developing the Noble Eightfold Path, who is cultivating the Noble Eightfold Path, slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna."

Six slanting to the east,
and six slanting to the ocean;
these two sixes make twelve —
hence this chapter is so called.
