[789] Which phenomena (dhammā) are both clingings (upādāna) and associated with clinging (upādāna-sampayutta)? Clinging to views (diṭṭhupādāna) is both a clinging and associated with clinging through clinging to sensuality (kāmupādāna). Clinging to sensuality is both a clinging and associated with clinging through clinging to views. Clinging to rules and observances (sīlabbatupādāna) is both a clinging and associated with clinging through clinging to sensuality. Clinging to sensuality is both a clinging and associated with clinging through clinging to rules and observances. Clinging to a doctrine of self (attavādupādāna) is both a clinging and associated with clinging through clinging to sensuality. Clinging to sensuality is both a clinging and associated with clinging through clinging to a doctrine of self. These phenomena are both clingings and associated with clinging. Which phenomena are associated with clinging but not clingings? Whatever phenomena are associated with those [clinging] phenomena — setting aside those [clinging] phenomena — namely: the aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha) … the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇakkhandha) — these phenomena are associated with clinging but not clingings.
