[1050] And how does [the craving (taṇhā)], 'May I too be thus,' occur? It occurs when one compares oneself with another person: 'As that one is a khattiya, so may I too be a khattiya,' or 'As that one is a brāhmaṇa, so may I too be a brāhmaṇa,' … or 'As that one is neither percipient nor non-percipient (nevasaññīnāsaññī), so may I too be neither percipient nor non-percipient.' Thus [the craving], 'May I too be thus,' occurs.
