[1036] For whomever the bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra) arises, does the verbal formation (vacīsaṅkhāra) arise for him?
Apart from thought-conception and discursive thought (vitakka-vicāra), at the moment of the arising (uppādakkhaṇa) of in-breaths and out-breaths (assāsa-passāsa), the bodily formation arises for them, but the verbal formation does not arise for them. In the case of sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) beings who have attained the first jhāna (paṭhamajjhāna), at the moment of the arising of in-breaths and out-breaths, for them the bodily formation arises and the verbal formation arises.
Or rather, for whomever the verbal formation arises, does the bodily formation arise for him?
Apart from in-breaths and out-breaths, at the moment of the arising of thought-conception and discursive thought, the verbal formation arises for them, but the bodily formation does not arise for them. In the case of sense-sphere beings who have attained the first jhāna, at the moment of the arising of in-breaths and out-breaths, for them the verbal formation arises and the bodily formation arises.
