[1039] Where bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra) arises, does verbal formation (vacīsaṅkhāra) arise there?
In the second jhāna and in the third jhāna, bodily formation arises there, but verbal formation does not arise there. In the first jhāna and in the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), there both bodily formation arises and verbal formation arises.
Or else, where verbal formation arises, does bodily formation arise there?
In the form sphere (rūpāvacara) and in the formless sphere (arūpāvacara), verbal formation arises there, but bodily formation does not arise there. In the first jhāna and in the sense sphere, there both verbal formation arises and bodily formation arises.
