[455] For whomever, wherever, the eye base (cakkhāyatana) arises, will the ear base (sotāyatana) arise for that one there?
For those in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) who are being reborn into the five-constituent existence (pañcavokāra), the eye base arises for them there, but the ear base will not arise for them there. For the others with eyes (sacakkhuka) who are being reborn, both the eye base arises for them there and the ear base will arise.
Or, for whomever, wherever, the ear base will arise, does the eye base arise for that one there?
For those passing away from the five-constituent existence and for those without eyes (acakkhuka) who are being reborn into the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), the ear base will arise for them there, but the eye base does not arise for them there. For those with eyes who are being reborn, both the ear base will arise for them there and the eye base arises.
