[476] For whomever, wherever, the eye base (cakkhāyatana) does not arise, will the ear base (sotāyatana) not arise for that one there?
For those passing away from the five-constituent existence (pañcavokāra), and for eyeless beings being reborn into the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), the eye base does not arise for them there, but it is not the case that the ear base will not arise for them there. For those attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent existence, for non-percipient beings (asaññasattā), and for formless beings (arūpā), the eye base does not arise for them there, and the ear base will not arise.
Or again, for whomever, wherever, the ear base will not arise, does the eye base not arise for that one there?
For those in their final existence (pacchimabhavikā) being reborn into the five-constituent existence, the ear base will not arise for them there, but it is not the case that the eye base does not arise for them there. For those attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent existence, for non-percipient beings, and for formless beings, the ear base will not arise for them there, and the eye base does not arise.
