[466] For whomever the eye base (cakkhāyatana) does not arise, will the ear base (sotāyatana) not arise for that one?
For all those who are passing away, and for the eyeless (acakkhuka) who are being reborn — for them the eye base does not arise, but it is not the case that the ear base will not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent [existence] (pañcavokāra), for those in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) in the formless [realm] (arūpa), and for those who, having been reborn in the formless [realm], will attain final Nibbāna — for them, as they are passing away, the eye base does not arise and the ear base will not arise.
Or rather, for whomever the ear base will not arise, does the eye base not arise for that one?
For those in their final existence who are being reborn into the five-constituent [existence], and for those who, having been reborn in the formless [realm], will attain final Nibbāna — for them, as they are being reborn, the ear base will not arise, but it is not the case that the eye base does not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent [existence], for those in their final existence in the formless [realm], and for those who, having been reborn in the formless [realm], will attain final Nibbāna — for them, as they are passing away, the ear base will not arise and the eye base does not arise.
