[633] For whom the eye base (cakkhāyatana) does not cease, will the ear base (sotāyatana) not cease for him?
For all those who are being reborn, and for the eyeless who are passing away — for them the eye base does not cease, but it is not the case that for them the ear base will not cease. For those in their final existence in the immaterial [plane] — for them the eye base does not cease and the ear base will not cease.
Or rather, for whom the ear base will not cease, does the eye base not cease for him?
For those attaining final Nibbāna (parinibbāna) in the five-constituent existence (pañcavokāra), and for those who, having been reborn in the immaterial [plane], will attain final Nibbāna — for these, while they are passing away, the ear base will not cease, but it is not the case that for them the eye base does not cease. For those in their final existence in the immaterial [plane] — for them the ear base will not cease and the eye base does not cease.
