[1149] For whom the eye-faculty (cakkhundriya) does not arise, for him the ear-faculty (sotindriya) will not arise?
For all beings who are passing away and for eyeless beings (acakkhuka) who are being reborn — for these the eye-faculty does not arise, but it is not the case that the ear-faculty will not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna (parinibbāna) in the five-constituent existence (pañcavokāra), for beings in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) in the immaterial existence (arūpa), and for those who, having been reborn into the immaterial existence, will attain final Nibbāna — for these beings, as they are passing away, the eye-faculty does not arise and the ear-faculty will not arise.
Or rather, for whom the ear-faculty will not arise, for him the eye-faculty does not arise?
For beings in their final existence who are being reborn into the five-constituent existence, and for those who, having been reborn into the immaterial existence, will attain final Nibbāna — for these beings, as they are being reborn, the ear-faculty will not arise, but it is not the case that the eye-faculty does not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent existence, for beings in their final existence in the immaterial existence, and for those who, having been reborn into the immaterial existence, will attain final Nibbāna — for these beings, as they are passing away, the ear-faculty will not arise and the eye-faculty does not arise.
