[1155] "For whomever the eye faculty (cakkhundriya) does not arise, will the equanimity faculty (upekkhindriya) not arise for that one?"
For all who are passing away, and for those without eyes (acakkhuka) who are being reborn — for them the eye faculty does not arise, but it is not the case that the equanimity faculty will not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna (parinibbāna) in the five-constituent existence (pañcavokāra), for those in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) in the immaterial (arūpa), and for those who, having been reborn with joy (somanassa), will attain final Nibbāna — for them, as they are passing away, the eye faculty does not arise and the equanimity faculty will not arise.
"Or rather, for whomever the equanimity faculty will not arise, does the eye faculty not arise for that one?"
For those in their final existence who are being reborn into the five-constituent existence, and for those possessed of eyes (sacakkhuka) who, having been reborn with joy, will attain final Nibbāna — for them, as they are being reborn, the equanimity faculty will not arise, but it is not the case that the eye faculty does not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent existence, for those in their final existence in the immaterial, and for those who, having been reborn with joy, will attain final Nibbāna — for them, as they are passing away, the equanimity faculty will not arise and the eye faculty does not arise.
