[1190] For whatever being in whatever plane the eye faculty (cakkhundriya) does not arise, will the joy faculty (somanassindriya) not arise for that being in that plane?
For beings passing away from the five-constituent existence (pañcavokāra), and for eyeless beings being reborn into the sense sphere (kāmāvacara) — the eye faculty does not arise for them in that plane, yet it is not the case that the joy faculty will not arise for them in that plane. For beings attaining final Nibbāna (parinibbāna) in the five-constituent existence, for non-percipient beings (asaññasattā), for formless beings (arūpā), and for those possessed of eyes who, having been reborn with equanimity (upekkhā), will attain final Nibbāna — for these beings as they are passing away — the eye faculty does not arise and the joy faculty will not arise for them in that plane.
Or rather, for whatever being in whatever plane the joy faculty will not arise, does the eye faculty not arise for that being in that plane?
For beings in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) being reborn into the five-constituent existence, and for those possessed of eyes who, having been reborn with equanimity, will attain final Nibbāna — for these beings as they are being reborn — the joy faculty will not arise for them in that plane, yet it is not the case that the eye faculty does not arise for them in that plane. For beings attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent existence, for non-percipient beings, for formless beings, and for those possessed of eyes who, having been reborn with equanimity, will attain final Nibbāna — for these beings as they are passing away — the joy faculty will not arise and the eye faculty does not arise for them in that plane.
