[1162] For whomever the nose faculty (ghānindriya) does not arise, will the equanimity faculty (upekkhindriya) not arise for him?
For all who are passing away, and for those without a nose (aghānaka) who are being reborn: for them the nose faculty does not arise, but it is not the case that the equanimity faculty will not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna in the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), for those in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) in the form sphere (rūpāvacara) and in the formless sphere (arūpāvacara), and for those who, having been reborn with joy (somanassa), will attain final Nibbāna: for these, as they are passing away, the nose faculty does not arise and the equanimity faculty will not arise.
Or else, for whomever the equanimity faculty will not arise, does the nose faculty not arise for him?
For those in their final existence who are being reborn into the sense sphere, and for those possessing a nose (saghānaka) who, having been reborn with joy, will attain final Nibbāna: for these, as they are being reborn, the equanimity faculty will not arise, but it is not the case that the nose faculty does not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna in the sense sphere, for those in their final existence in the form sphere and in the formless sphere, and for those who, having been reborn with joy, will attain final Nibbāna: for these, as they are passing away, the equanimity faculty will not arise and the nose faculty does not arise.
