[1171] For whomever the masculinity faculty (purisindriya) does not arise, will the equanimity faculty (upekkhindriya) not arise for him?
For all who are passing away and for non-males who are being reborn — for them the masculinity faculty does not arise, but it is not the case that the equanimity faculty will not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna (parinibbāna) in the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), for those in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) in the form sphere (rūpāvacara) and the formless sphere (arūpāvacara), and for those who, having been reborn with joy (somanassa), will attain final Nibbāna — for them, as they are passing away, the masculinity faculty does not arise and the equanimity faculty will not arise.
Or rather, for whomever the equanimity faculty will not arise, does the masculinity faculty not arise for him?
For males in their final existence who are being reborn, and for those males who, having been reborn with joy, will attain final Nibbāna — for them, as they are being reborn, the equanimity faculty will not arise, but it is not the case that the masculinity faculty does not arise for them. For those attaining final Nibbāna in the sense sphere, for those in their final existence in the form sphere and the formless sphere, and for those who, having been reborn with joy, will attain final Nibbāna — for them, as they are passing away, the equanimity faculty will not arise and the masculinity faculty does not arise.
