[644] For whomever the equanimity faculty (upekkhindriya) does not arise, does the faith faculty (saddhindriya) not arise for him?
For those with roots (sahetuka) who are being reborn without equanimity, and, in the course of existence (pavatti), at the moment of arising of a mind (citta) dissociated from equanimity but associated with faith — for them the equanimity faculty does not arise, but it is not that the faith faculty does not arise for them. For all [beings] at the moment of the dissolution of mind, at the moment of arising of a mind dissociated from equanimity and dissociated from faith, for those who have attained cessation (nirodha-samāpanna), and for non-percipient beings (asaññasatta) — for them both the equanimity faculty does not arise and the faith faculty does not arise.
Or, for whomever the faith faculty does not arise, does the equanimity faculty not arise for him?
For those without roots (ahetuka) who are being reborn with equanimity, and, in the course of existence, at the moment of arising of a mind dissociated from faith but associated with equanimity — for them the faith faculty does not arise, but it is not that the equanimity faculty does not arise for them. For all [beings] at the moment of the dissolution of mind, at the moment of arising of a mind dissociated from faith and dissociated from equanimity, for those who have attained cessation, and for non-percipient beings — for them both the faith faculty does not arise and the equanimity faculty does not arise.
