[1378] A phenomenon of the nature to produce results (vipākadhammadhamma) is a condition for a resultant phenomenon (vipāka dhamma) by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya): proximity decisive support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive support: depending on faith (saddhā), one torments oneself, mortifies oneself, experiences the suffering (dukkha) rooted in seeking … depending on longing (patthanā), one torments oneself, mortifies oneself … Faith … longing is a condition for bodily pleasure, for bodily pain, for the attainment of fruition (phala-samāpatti) by decisive-support condition. The wholesome and the unwholesome are a condition for the result of kamma by decisive-support condition. The path (magga) is a condition for the attainment of fruition by decisive-support condition.
A phenomenon of the nature to produce results is a condition for a phenomenon that is neither a result nor of the nature to produce results (nevavipākanavipākadhammadhamma) by decisive-support condition: object decisive support (ārammaṇūpanissaya), natural decisive support.
Natural decisive support: an Arahant, depending on the path, produces the unarisen functional attainment (kiriya-samāpatti), enters upon the arisen one, contemplates with insight formations (saṅkhāra) as impermanent, as suffering, as non-self … The path is a condition for the Arahant's discrimination of meaning (attha-paṭisambhidā), for the discrimination of dhamma, of language, and of sagacity (dhamma-, nirutti-, paṭibhāṇa-paṭisambhidā), and for skill in what is possible and impossible (ṭhānāṭhāna-kosalla), by decisive-support condition.
