[17] Dependent on a phenomenon (dhamma) with thought-conception and discursive thought (savitakka-savicāra), on a phenomenon without thought-conception but with discursive thought only (avitakka-vicāramatta), and on a phenomenon without thought-conception and without discursive thought (avitakka-avicāra), phenomena with thought-conception and discursive thought, and phenomena without thought-conception and without discursive thought, arise by root condition (hetu-paccaya): at the moment of rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), dependent on one aggregate (khandha) with thought-conception and discursive thought, on thought-conception (vitakka), and on the base (vatthu), three aggregates arise; dependent on three aggregates, on thought-conception, and on the base, one aggregate arises; dependent on two aggregates, on thought-conception, and on the base, two aggregates arise; dependent on the aggregates with thought-conception and discursive thought, on thought-conception, and on the primary elements (mahābhūta), kamma-produced materiality (kaṭattārūpa) arises.
