[175] A phenomenon (dhamma) accompanied by thought-conception (vitakka) and discursive thought (vicāra) is a condition, by immediacy condition (anantara-paccaya), for a phenomenon without thought-conception and without discursive thought. Adverting (āvajjanā) is a condition, by immediacy condition, for the five consciousnesses (viññāṇa). A death consciousness (cuticitta) accompanied by thought-conception and discursive thought is a condition, by immediacy condition, for a rebirth consciousness (upapatticitta) without thought-conception and without discursive thought, and for discursive thought. Aggregates (khandhā) accompanied by thought-conception and discursive thought are a condition for emergence (vuṭṭhāna) without thought-conception and without discursive thought, and for discursive thought; the preliminary work (parikamma) for the second jhāna is a condition, by immediacy condition, for the discursive thought in the second jhāna.
